The Tech. Bits

I know, many don’t care or want to know about the technology involved/used.

Many haven’t the first desire to read about equipment and technique, but some do:)

For the equipment, it is of importance y’know;)Not ALL things are created equal, and some indeed does lend itself to certain situations more than others:)

I use Nikon products. I use D3 and D700 camera bodies (which have tremendous clarity of image and beautiful files). Together with these, and arguably of more importance here (more on this presently) I use an 85mm f/1.4 lens, a 50mm f/1.4 lens, a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and a 200mm f/2 lens (although I have other’s, these are the mainstays here).

For processing I employ a Mac Book Pro loaded with Lightroom and Photoshop CS4 and a veritable smorgasbord of filters and actions.

So, why is this important?

Well, I see Boudoir Photography as “suggestion” for the most part. That means (to me) although it is glamorous and beautiful and sexy, more is left to the imagination than say straight “glamor” photography.

By this I mean, the angles, perspective and depth of field are quite unique and very important to this style. Now, much is down to the Photographer’s eye, but the depth of field, the “softer” part of an image is very much controlled by the lens. The part that we “know” what’s there but it’s not so clear as to leave nothing to the imagination.

Most frequently I shoot very “wide open”, that is to say with my lens at a very wide aperture (opening) to allow for that beautiful shallow/soft depth of field and “suggestive” nature in an image. This is best employed with something like f/1.4 to f/2, so you can see that the lens (and it’s range) is very important. Only the best Pro lenses allow for such constant wide apertures and thus they are the best for this type of Photography.

That’s not to say that clarity or a more “defined” image is not desired or employed at times, just that the “suggestive” nature often requested is only possible with lenses of the type I have mentioned.

I strive to keep up with technology as it constantly changes, so you can rest assured that not only will you be employing my “eye” and “style” as a Photographer, but also the latest equipment that is available.
